Y20 Summit in Brazil: Five youth representatives from the DNK were in attendance

The Youth 20 Summit (Y20) takes place annually in the run-up to the G20 Summit. At this event, youth representatives from the G20 countries discuss various key issues. This year, once again, five youth representatives, under the auspices of the DNK, presented the needs of young people in Germany. The final document, containing specific demands, was handed over to the Brazilian presidency of the G20 Summit.

This year’s Y20 Summit took place from 10 to 17 August 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition, a pre-summit was held from 16 to 21 June in Belém, Brazil, in a format that was also broadcast digitally, to allow for thorough preparation. In the run-up to the G20 Summit, youth representatives at the Y20 discussed many of the same issues that were also on the agenda at the summit of heads of state and government. The exchange of views among young people in the G20 format is important for intercultural understanding and also offers the opportunity to put forward demands to heads of government. The final outcome is a document setting out demands (a communiqué) that highlights young people’s perspectives on these issues.

Representing Germany, and delegated by the German National Committee for International Youth Work (DNK), were Maurice Bessling, Hannah Koch, Lisa Mastiaux, Isabell Steidel and Moritz Übermuth. The substantive discussions were divided into the following five tracks:

  1. Fighting hunger, poverty and inequality
  2. Climate change, energy transition and sustainable development
  3. Reform of the global governance context
  4. Inclusion and diversity
  5. Innovation and the future of the world of work

As part of the Y20 Summit, the delegation took part in a varied cultural programme, amongst other things, which served to lighten the atmosphere during the long and intense days of negotiations. The delegates were able to use this opportunity to network with other delegations and to sound out positions. In addition, the delegation, together with the French delegation, had an engaging bilateral exchange with both consulates in Rio de Janeiro.

The negotiations were shaped, among other things, by the global political situation. The demands made by the youth representatives to the G20 heads of state and government are published in the final communiqué .
